Usage

Loading one set

Put a body, its required surface materials, and a log into the four material slots in any order. A complete set moves together into processing: the body and surface materials above, one log in the separate slot below. Unneeded surface slots stay empty.

One log per piece

The log stays visible below while the piece fires. It is consumed together with the body and surface materials when firing finishes. Every kind of log pays for one piece; the ware determines how long firing takes.

Behavior

No fire underneath

The log burns inside the kiln, so no separate heat source is needed underneath.

Retrieving the reserved set

You can retrieve items from the pale processing slots but cannot insert anything into them by hand. Removing any part, including the log, cancels firing. Retrieve the rest to allow another set to enter. Changing the material buffer leaves the reserved set unchanged.

One piece at a time

Stacked materials are fired one piece at a time. Each new set needs its own log.

Inputs above and beside, outputs below

Hoppers above or beside feed all four material slots. A hopper below extracts finished ware.

In the real world

A climbing kiln is built up a hillside and stoked with wood for days on end. Where a piece stands in it, how the ash falls on it and how the flame licks it are what the finished surface shows.

Differences in game

Satoyama shrinks the kiln to a single block and folds the biscuit firing and the glaze firing into one. Neither the temperature nor the atmosphere is yours to work; what you put in decides what comes out.
