Usage
Fuel slot examples
While the fuel slot is empty, faint examples cycle through the fuels it accepts. The examples disappear when fuel is inserted.
Blowing the steel
Iron sand goes in the left slot and fuel underneath. It moves into the middle slots a scoop at a time and the furnace only starts blowing once all four are full. The work advances while the fire burns, so it stops where it stood if the fuel runs out. It takes a while.

Material and fuel inputs share one vertical column, leading to the working materials and the flames below them.

A faded coal icon marks the empty fuel slot. Feed it coal, charcoal, or a coal block to fire the furnace.
The middle slots are the hearth
The pale slots are the iron sand already in the hearth. You cannot put anything into them by hand, though you can take it back out. How many stand empty is how many scoops are still wanted before it will run.
Only coal and charcoal burn
A tatara burns charcoal. Nothing but charcoal, coal and coal blocks will go in the fire hole.
No fire underneath
The furnace is the fire, so there is nothing to light underneath it; the fuel burns inside.

A tatara is charged with iron sand and charcoal and blown for three days and nights. The charcoal is not only the heat: it is what puts the carbon into the iron.
Differences in game
Satoyama does not model building the furnace, or breaking up and sorting the bloom; all of it happens inside the block as one step. The bellows survives as part of the shape.
