Bizen Ware Platter

CategoryBlock

A platter for up to four okazu. Fired without glaze. Ash speckles the scorched brown face, and the marks left by stacking show as red-brown discs.

Obtaining

Usage

Fired with straw and nothing else

Straw laid beside the platter body in the kiln gives you this ware. No glaze goes on it; where the straw touched, the surface stays red.

Plating together

The platter does not turn dishes into something else. Set fried cod beside fried potatoes and that is your fish and chips.

In the real world

Bizen ware is made from iron-bearing clay, left unglazed and fired long in a wood kiln. Ash, flame, position and contact with straw give each piece its own kiln marks.

Differences in game

Satoyama does not separate the regional clay or positions in the kiln; adding straw to the shared body folds them into one Bizen look.
