An ear still in its husk, peeled back just enough to show the rows of yellow grain. Edible raw, sweeter off the fire.

A tall farmland crop. Grown plants stand two blocks high, with the tassel at the top and the husked ear halfway up the stalk. Without headroom the second block cannot rise and growth stalls there. Breaking either half harvests the whole plant. First seeds come from wild corn on savanna plateaus or sunflower plains.

Ecological basis

Maize descends from teosinte of Mexico and Central America, plants of seasonally dry open country. Savanna plateaus represent warm upland grassland, and sunflower plains represent sunny farmland.

Usage

A field that needs headroom

Growing indoors or in a tunnel? Leave two blocks of air above the farmland. Under a low ceiling the plant stops one stage short and never ears up.

Behavior

Either end takes the plant

Break the upper block or the lower one — either takes the whole plant. Nothing is left behind when you reap a tall field at chest height.

Straw from the sickle

Cut a mature plant with a sickle and you get straw alongside the corn, just as with wheat and rice — and the same when you cut it at the upper block.
