Setting out the harvest
Right-click with a crop to set one down where you aimed; an empty hand takes back the nearest one. Four of the same or four different ones are both fine.
What it takes
Crops straight from the field or the tree go in, and so do golden apples. Dried, cured, and cooked things do not, and neither do seeds or seedlings.

Behavior
Stocking with a dispenser
A dispenser facing the crate sets down one crop or golden apple from inside it in an open spot. Take things back from the crate by hand.
Reading it with redstone
A comparator reports the number of the spot last used — 1 at the back left, 2 at the back right, 3 at the front left, 4 at the front right — and 0 on a crate nobody has touched. It does not report how many are in it; this is the way a chiseled bookshelf reads. An observer fires whenever anything is set down or taken off any spot.
