Planted asWinged Bean Seeds

A green pod with four frilled ridges. Crisp and mild — more at home in a stir-fry than eaten whole. Also the source of winged bean seeds.

The climbing bean of Okinawa, bearing frilled four-cornered pods. Its proper training is a single upright stake, though it takes to nets and trellises just the same.

Usage

For the pan

Edible as-is, though modestly filling. Craft it into seeds to widen the patch, or stock it for champuru.

Standing a stake

Sow on farmland and stand a bamboo stake beside the plant. Once mature, the vine twines its way up the pole — pile the stakes higher and it climbs as far as its reach allows.

Harvest

Right-click a grown pod to pick it. The plant and vines stay, bearing again over time. A dispenser loaded with shears picks them too.

Behavior

Where the pods grow

With open air below, the pods dangle under the vine; with the underside blocked they set on the vine itself. Pods form on the vines near the plant and only here and there farther out.

In the real world

In Okinawa, winged bean is also called urizun-mame or shikaku-mami; these are regional names for the same crop.
